Jayashree Todkar is Asia's first female bariatric and laparoscopic surgeon. Jayashree has been appointed the secretary of Obesity Surgery Society of India (OSSI). Todkar has treated more than 25000 patients and continues her research and treatment in advanced laparoscopic surgeries, bariatric surgeries, trauma, hernia surgeries and metabolic surgery. She is the first Indian lady doctor to represent India at this level internationally. Todkar has been selected as a faculty member for the next Endoluminal and Laparoscopic Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Course which will take place at Institute for Research on Cancers of the Digestive Tract (IRCAD) in Taiwan. Todkar helped Maharashtra current Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to lose 26 kg. Todkar also treated D. Y. Patil who was the Governor of Bihar.

Fight obesity awareness

Maharashtra government's Medical Education and Drugs Department along with 'JT Foundation' has launched "Fight Obesity", an obesity awareness initiative today. Girish Mahajan, minister for medical education and water resources launched this campaign simultaneously across medical colleges in Maharashtra. Under the leadership of chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis who strives to fight the increasing prevalence of obesity and serious lifestyle diseases associated with it. The state government has formed a task force that will work on the awareness correction, prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Early life

Jayashree Todkar completed diploma in advance laparoscopic surgery from University of Strasbourg, France in 2003, Bariatric fellowship from Dr Scopinaro, University of Genoa, Italy in 2005, bariatric training at Gastro Obeso Center, Brazil in 2008 and Fellowship in Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA in 2009. Her expertise lies in gastrointestinal surgery, laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, and bariatric surgery.

Research and achievements

A study conducted by Pune doctors, members of the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO) and the advances of research in obesity (ARIO) has revealed that more than 50 per cent of children between 13 and 17 years of age were prone to develop diabetes and obesity later in their lives. It has come to the fore that around 200 million school children are either overweight or obese. So a survey was conducted which was led by Todkar, who found that students from privately run schools are more obese than the ones who study in municipal schools. Todkar operated 27-year-old patient who was weighted (150 kg).

Study and awards

A Pune-based surgeon has presented a study to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) on how a surgery, usually meant for weight reduction, can help in controlling the chronic disease. The study was conducted by Todkar and Dr. Shah and their team. The study won the American Diabetes Association's 2016 Vivian Fonseca Scholar Award.
